1. Supply registers:

Air registers are openings that supply heated air to the rooms. Start covering up your supply air registers with paper towels. This keeps the dislodged dust from sifting into the rooms as you work. Upon every round of cleaning, simply lift the register, wrap the paper towel over the top of it, and replace it otherwise pollutants will get accumulated and thereby blocking the air channels.

2. Switching on fans:

A very simple trick a learned from the repairman is turning the fan on. If the fan is running while you are cleaning, the dust that you are going to loosen with your rubbing and brushing moves along out of the system. Make sure that the thermostat is set to “fan on,” and shut off the “heat/cool” mode so that only the fan is running. 6. Clean return air registers:

Sweep out your return air registers. These are likely to be fastened with a screw and require a basic tool to remove them. Again, brush and sweep as far back into the register piping or cavity as you can.

7. Shut off fan and furnace:

Also follow some level of security during this operation. Remember to shut the fan off at the thermostat along with the power off to the furnace via the service switch or breaker panel. Do not just shut off the thermostat, as that doesn’t turn off the power to the unit.

8. Clean the blower compartment:

Now turn the power off. Remove the panels on the front of the furnace. This allows you to access the blower compartment and the return air boot. Use vacuum to sweep up the dust built up in this component. This is where the majority of your dust bulks up. While you’re at it, you should clean the furnace fan as well.

9. Replace furnace filter:

Buying a certified filter will cut down on the dust in your home. However, there’s another point to make a note of: the better the filter, the more frequently it must be changed. As we discussed earlier, a dirty filter may restrict the airflow to the fan. This leads to increased load on the appliance. The blower motor will be getting hotter which will subsequently reduce its lifespan. You might want to maintain certain regularity in these cleanliness measures.
